VCU 79, Duke 77.

I had actually picked this upset in my bracket, but that wasn’t what made me so happy when this game ended. It was seeing the disappointment in the eyes of the Dukies, who as any person in their right mind knows are the evil incarnate of college basketball. I knew VCU only had 6 losses all season, despite their lousy Colonial Conference membership. Duke struggled all year with tough teams who played them tight, losing more games than they had in years. I printed the headline when they finally dropped from the rankings and pasted it to my office door at work. It’s weird, I’m nearly as excited by their failure as I was by the success of the Colts in the Super Bowl!

The icing on the cake was my Hoosiers defeating Gonzaga, a game I’d picked that way but didn’t feel particularly strong about. Any IU alumnus knows what I’m talking about, though I’m feeling like we’re finally not bound for first round losses like we seemed to so commonly experience during the trailing end of the Knight era.
