kickin it old school

booker t and the mg’s — picked up the album “melting pot”. right now, my favorite track has to be “chicken pox”. i hated having the chicken pox, you get that shit EVERYWHERE.

lee sain — “them hot pants”. you shore look good in those hot paaaints! any song about hot pants, fashion’s gift to all mankind, is worthy of spinning. this one has some nice horns, and the gritty guitar makes it dirty dirty.

chicago — “feelin stronger every day”. i’ve had this on cassette for years, but hadn’t acquired a digital copy until recently. seriously, chicago turned out some pretty sappy crap in the late 80’s, but who in the hell had a horn section like that in the 70’s? this song is a particularly great example. the thumpy bass line and vocal harmonies kick.

melvin van peebles — “sweetback’s theme”. i saw this movie for the first time during my first semester at IU. i registered late, but got a contemporary black film class that i was actually interested in. the scene where sweetback turns from a boy doing a hooker to a full fledged man was great, but nothing beats a hammond organ jam and some trumpets coming in on the breaks. boy, you gotta sweet, sweet back.
