why is frito lay trying to kill me?

so tonight i accompany the wife to the corner store to pick up some milk, sparkling water, and some snacks. the “new” sun chips cinnamon flavored multigrain snacks catch my eye. ooh, a little heart icon, and a statistic noting 18 grams of whole grains per serving! and the kickass “smart choices made easy” logo at the bottom! usually these sun chips are about the last things i really want to eat, but i was always a big fan of those taco bell cinnamon crispas. i go for it.

i get home, open the bag, have a couple, and read the ingredients:

INGREDIENTS: WHOLE CORN, SUNFLOWER OIL, WHOLE WHEAT, RICE FLOUR, WHOLE OAT FLOUR, SUGAR,CINNAMON, FRUCTOSE, DEXTROSE, SALT, BUTTERMILK SOLIDS, NATURAL FLAVOR, SUCRALOSE, AND CITRIC ACID

NOWHERE on this package other than the ingredients does the label contain any warning about the presence of an artificial sweetener in the product. buy anything with saccharin or nutrasweet (aspartame) and there’s a warning plain as day on the product. i’ve ran into this before with several brands of microwave popcorn of the “kettle corn” variety. check your box, i bet it’s got sucralose in it.

i am uncomfortable with eating a product that somewhat stealthily contains a compound which is essentially a chlorinated sugar molecule that might give me problems with my thymus, kidneys, or liver.
