dear president bush, you are not even trying now.

i guess that it should really come as no surprise that president bush has commuted scooter libby’s sentence and that he is not going to face jail time for his conviction in the outing of a CIA operative. despite Bush’s statements in 2003 when the case broke that:

“I want to know who it is, and if the person has violated law, the person will be taken care of.”

or his affirmative claim from 2004 of whether he stood by his promise to fire whoever was found to have leaked Plame’s name.

or again in july 2005, when the president claimed he would fire anyone involved with the leak.

well, where do we stand today then? well, libby is out of the adminstration, he’s stuck with that felon tag forever, and he’s gotta pay a $250,000 fine still (which maybe halliburton can just cut him a check for). but there is a serious air of double standard lingering about everything. this was essentially an act of treason to expose an undercover CIA operative, and wasn’t bush doing some post 9/11 saber rattling about either being with us or against us? this clearly seems like an “against us” thing.

and then there’s the issue of bush’s statements that the sentence of 30 months was so unfair, and that with “the denial of bail being upheld and incarceration imminent” he just had to act. wait dude, don’t you run a tropical prison paradise where enemy combatants aren’t even afforded the protections of the geneva convention? habeas corpus is suspended, bail is a foreign concept, and torture is how we get people to confess to crimes? what with the treasonous acts and all, i’m seeing that scooter’s jeopardizing national security, and i think a good waterboarding is the only cure.

thankfully, at least nancy pelosi broke out the baby claws:

The President said he would hold accountable anyone involved in the Valerie Plame leak case. By his action today, the President shows his word is not to be believed. He has abandoned all sense of fairness when it comes to justice, he has failed to uphold the rule of law, and he has failed to hold his Administration accountable.

yeah, that pretty much sums it up without all the cursing. nice one, nanc.
